It’s music to the ears of the Foundation for Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges, which has tallied more than $91,000 in donations from its Give the Dream music video fundraising campaign that ended last week.
The funds raised via social media by viewers of the foundation’s music video featuring faces and organizations on and off the campuses will go toward a program that issues emergency grants to students of Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges.
“We are ecstatic over the strong support shown for the students and the wonderful programs and offerings of our East County community colleges,” said John Valencia, Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District associate vice chancellor of Advancement and Communications and Foundation CEO. “This was an entirely new area for us, so we are thrilled by the outcome reflecting thousands of views of the music video posted just six weeks ago. “
Give the Dream provides emergency grants of up to $500 to students facing unexpected financial hardships that put their college attendance at risk. In addition to the emergency grants, the students are also provided resources to help them build their money-management skills.
Supporters of the colleges were invited to go to the Give the Dream website and view and share the video, which featured students and college staffers, as well as people in the community, singing their variation of a catchy pop tune with lyrics calling for donations.
Planning for the Give the Dream video began in January, involving foundation staff, students from Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges, and community members. The video was filmed at the East County college campuses and at Grossmont Center in La Mesa, where the public was invited to participate.
Along with students and staff, local business sponsors Barona Resort & Casino, California Coast Credit Union, and Sharp Grossmont Hospital were featured in the video, as were representatives of the Grossmont Healthcare District, Ron Cook Media, Sycuan Casino, and Zavaro Cardiovascular Institute.
Other Give the Dream sponsors included American Medical Response, the Law Offices of Fischbeck & Oberndorfer, Strata Information Group, and Grossmont Schools Federal Credit Union.
“With our colleges serving the public throughout the East County and beyond, we wanted the music video to reflect our strong community and business ties,” Valencia said. “We are grateful for the support shown to us through these donations and donors can be assured that the money they gave will go to help the neediest of our students continue to strive to reach their educational goals.”
