Grossmont College to celebrate 50th anniversary with fundraising celebration on Saturday, Oct. 22

“Fifty and Fantabulous” is the theme of the fundraising celebration that will be held Oct. 22 to celebrate Grossmont College’s 50th anniversary. Guests are encouraged to dress in the attire they may have worn as a college student, whether it’s the peace beads of the 1960s or the acid-washed jeans of the 1980s.

The party will be held at Grossmont College’s Health and Sciences Complex, the newest building at the school’s El Cajon campus. The event is hosted by the Foundation for Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges, the recently-formed fundraising organization that supports students and educational programs at Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, and tickets cost $175 per person.

The event is part of a year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of Grossmont College, which began classes in 1961. Suggested attire is casual and retro, reflecting fashions from the past 50 years. Recognition will be given for the best outfits in various categories, including tie-dye T-shirts and leisure suits.

Hors d’oeuvres and other food samples will be available at various food stations, as well as desserts, including birthday cake. More than 800 silent and live auction items are expected to be available to the highest bidders.

Also located in different areas of the two-story Health and Sciences Complex will be displays of photographs, memorabilia and videos chronicling the college’s 50-year history, as well as performances from students, including guitar players, dancers and Gospel Choir singers. Guests can look forward to listening to their favorite pop tunes heard during the previous five decades, and have their photograph shot inside an amusement park-style photo booth.

Grossmont College alumni, including members of the first few graduating classes, will be recognized at the event, along with faculty members and staff from the 1960s. Also available at the party will be information about future events that will be part of the college’s 50th anniversary.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.foundation.gcccd.edu. A map and driving directions to the campus located at 8800 Grossmont College Dr., El Cajon are at www.grossmont.edu.
